Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday urged the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries to cement confidence as a "complicated, severe external environment" poses challenges to the emerging-market bloc.
Speaking at an annual BRICS summit in the western Indian state of Goa, Xi called for building up an open economy and warned against all forms of protectionism.
He asked the BRICS countries to implement the outcomes of the 11th summit of the Group of 20 (G20) major economies held in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou in September, and to strive for a strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive global growth.
The Chinese leader made a five-point proposal for the BRICS nations to join hands in tough times, including building an open world, mapping out a shared development vision, coping with the most pressing global challenges, safeguarding fairness and justice in the international community, and deepening partnerships within the bloc.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that BRICS cooperation mechanism has made great contributions in promoting the world's economic prosperity, and improving the status of developing countries since it took shape 10 years ago.
He added that the BRICS countries should continue to work together to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and play a bigger role in the G20, the World Trade Organization and other important multilateral frameworks.
South African President Jacob Zuma said as BRICS countries accounted for almost half of the world population, they can with joint efforts help promote the world economic growth and improve the livelihood.
BRICS countries should call on the international community to pay more attention to and help the groups vulnerable to climate change and economic crisis, Zuma added.
Brazilian President Michel Temer called on BRICS countries to work together to cope with difficulties as they are faced with similar challenges.
Brazil calls for more measures to facilitate trade and investment among BRICS members, and strengthen partnership in the finance, science and technology, environment, and people-to-people exchanges.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said BRICS countries play an important role in promoting the global economic recovery. He called the bloc to implement the BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy adopted last year in Ufa and to strengthen cooperation in renewable energy, finance, trade, investment, e-commerce, health, education and other fields.
Russia calls on BRICS countries to continue their joint efforts to promote international economic and financial governance reform.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the BRICS cooperation mechanism, which gathers the world's five major emerging economies.
The bloc members have seen their cooperation grow over the past decade, especially with the establishment of the New Development Bank (NDB) and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA) in 2014.
